MelvilDewey447pxMr. Dewey lived about 100 years ago. He was a librarian who invented a way to organize books in the library so they could be easily found. Before, many libraries organized books by the date they recieved or acquired a new book. People who wanted to find information had to ask the librarian because that was the only person who knew where the information was.

Mr. Dewey decided that all books about the same topic should be in the same place. So all the books about cars (automobiles) are together, all the books about lions are together.

Automobiles

Lions

He gave each topic its own address-- like your house has an address. That way, when the library recieved a new book, the librarian could put it in the address that goes with that topic:

Lions

599.757

Automobiles

629.222

Titanic

919.916

He also put books of similar topics near each other:

Panthers

Tigers

Lions

599.755

599.756

599.757
