Add new items to your outline as you learn them. Delete items that no longer apply to your topic.

Add the details to your outline from your note cards that support the main points. This time, go back to the outline and rewrite all your points in complete sentences. This is called a sentence outline. Examples:

main point> A. This happened first

detail> 1. X person reported, "............."
detail> 2. Later on ..........
detail> 3. During this time ......... was happening
detail> 4. At the end of this period ..............

or

main point> A. This is the first reason

detail> 1. This reaction happened and was reported by.....
detail> 2. Person B observed, ".........."
detail> 3. This word means..........
detail> 4. This causes ......

In the other corner of each note card, begin writing the location of where that thought on the card fits into your outline. Example: II. A3

Each point in your outline should have at least at least two details. However, it’s best to aim for three to five details.
