User Names and Screen Names
User Names and Screen Names are credentials that identify you. They need to be different for every user of the site. Some sites have millions of users; it can be difficult to create a unique user name that you will remember.
The user name is the name the site asks for when you log in. You may be able to choose your own user name or it may require you to use your email address or a variation of your real name. Although email addresses guarantee that your user name will be unique and remembered, there can be problems if your email changes or someone finds out your email address from your user name and begins to send you spam. If someone already knows your name or email address, they already have half of your log in information. If you can, choose a user name that is not your email address or related to your real name, for best security. Keep a written record of your user name and tell your parents in case you forget.
Your screen name is different from your user name. Screen names are used on sites which allow you to indentify yourself to the other users of the site, such as social networks and gaming sites. This name is the one that is broadcast to all the users, so you must be extra careful about what name you choose. Do not use your name or any word that identifies you in the real world, such as any part of your real name, address, or school. You might choose a name related to a favorite thing or activity. Again, this name must be different from all the other users of the site. You will know if the name you chose is taken when the system asks you to choose again. Make varitions by adding numbers or interesting spellings. Remember that your screen name creates the first impression of you in the minds of others online. Be fun, but respectful of yourself and others in your choice. Talk with your parents about an appropriate screen name. Write the information down and share with your parents.
